Episode 35: Andy Swallow - Inter city firm, Pirate Radio owner & Illegal Rave Promoter

Welcome back to Season 3 of The Criminal Connection Podcast! We are thrilled to kick off this season with an iconic guest: Andy Swallow. Andy is known for being one of the original founders of the Inner City Firm (ICF), a notorious football hooligan group. But his journey didn't stop there—he went on to become a record label owner, entrepreneur, and rave promoter. Join us as we dive into the remarkable life of Andy Swallow.

Early Life and the Birth of the ICF

Growing up in Upton Park, Andy was immersed in the world of West Ham United from a young age. His father left when he was eight, and his mother raised him and his sister in the vibrant and sometimes tough East End of London. Andy’s early years were spent as a barrow boy in Upton Park Market, a foundation that taught him resilience and street smarts.

The 1970s saw the rise of various football hooligan groups, and by 1977, the Inner City Firm was born. The ICF was unique, composed of numerous smaller gangs that united under one banner. Andy recalls the early days, where the goal was to take the "end" of rival teams, a practice that defined football hooliganism at the time. The ICF name was coined during this period, inspired by the group's frequent travels on intercity trains to away games.

Transitioning from Hooliganism to Music

As the years passed, Andy transitioned from the violent world of football hooliganism to the equally intense but creatively fulfilling music scene. In the late 1980s, the rave culture was exploding in the UK. Andy and his friends, motivated by their love for music and a lack of DJ opportunities, founded Centerforce Radio. This pirate radio station quickly became a cornerstone of the burgeoning rave scene.

Centerforce Radio was instrumental in promoting house music and later, drum and bass. It became a platform for underground music and a community hub for ravers. Andy’s passion for music didn't stop at the airwaves. He also ventured into event promotion, organizing legendary parties that drew thousands of attendees.

The Rise of Public Demand and Craig David

Andy’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish the record label Public Demand. This label played a crucial role in the UK garage scene, launching hits that defined the genre. One of the most notable successes was signing Craig David and Artful Dodger, whose track "Rewind" became an anthem. Despite initial resistance from industry executives, the track's success was undeniable, propelling Craig David to stardom.

Public Demand's influence extended beyond Craig David. The label was behind numerous hits that helped shape the UK garage sound. Andy's ability to identify and nurture talent was a key factor in the label's success, making it a significant player in the music industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The Evolution of Centerforce Radio

Fast forward to today, and Centerforce Radio has evolved from its pirate roots into a legitimate, thriving platform. Broadcasting on DAB, the station boasts millions of listeners each month. Andy credits this success to the authenticity and passion of everyone involved. The station has stayed true to its origins, providing a home for both classic and contemporary dance music.

Andy’s son, Daniel, now plays a significant role in running Centerforce Radio, ensuring that the legacy continues. The station has expanded its reach and continues to innovate, adapting to the changing landscape of the music industry while maintaining its core values.

Reflections and Advice

Reflecting on his journey, Andy emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and following one’s dreams. He advises young people to stay vigilant and trust their instincts. Despite the challenges and controversies he has faced, Andy’s story is one of resilience and reinvention.

From leading one of the most notorious football firms to shaping the sound of UK garage, Andy Swallow's life is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. His influence on both football culture and the music industry is undeniable, making him a true legend in his own right.
